Explore New Maps of Where Research and Monitoring Are Occurring on the Northeast Ocean Data Portal 

The Northeast Ocean Data Portal now has first of its kind information that identifies where research and monitoring are being collected in U.S. Atlantic waters. This builds on the Regional Wildlife Science Collaborative’s (RWSC) standalone Research Planning Map* and coordination with RWSC’s expert Subcommittees to identify where research and monitoring are occurring.

Bringing ongoing and planned research projects into the Data Portal supports efficient research decisions and improves access to monitoring data. These research and monitoring data are critical for coordinating research and improving access to the information decision makers rely on for permitting, planning, and management across Atlantic waters. Now, Portal users can view ongoing and planned research projects alongside 8,700 data layers on marine life, habitat, and human use. These data are also reviewed through NROC’s ongoing outreach to federal agencies, states, Tribes, industry, and other experts.

This data update was made possible through close coordination with the Regional Wildlife Science Collaborative (RWSC), hosted by NROC and MARCO, that brings together industry, state and federal agencies, academia, NGO partners, and data contributors.

* The Research Planning Map at rwsc.org/map will run concurrently with the Data Portal through November, then retire, with all links redirecting to the Portal going forward; data on the Portal will continue to be reviewed and updated by the Subcommittees.
