NROC would like you to know –
- The Fall NROC Meeting will be held Thursday, October 24th on the URI Narragansett Bay Campus in Rhode Island. An agenda and briefing packet will be distributed prior to the meeting.
- NROC is seeking proposals from coastal communities in New England to improve resilience to coastal storms and effects of sea level rise. Specifically, NROC seeks to fund activities that meet the requirements of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Community Rating System (CRS) to improve participation in this flood insurance rate reduction program and prevent coastal storm damages. Proposals are due November 8th. See Request for Proposal for details.
- The Ocean Planning Committee’s project to develop maps of commercial fishing activity with participation of the commercial fishing industry, scientists, and managers is currently underway. The report of the first phase of this work is complete and now available: click for main body of report, appendices B-C, and appendices D-G. The file sizes are large, particularly for the appendices documents.

- New Ocean Film Features Northeast Regional Ocean Planning & Rhode Island Ocean SAMP: Green Fire Productions will premiere their newest film on ocean planning in October in Providence and Boston. Ocean Frontiers II: A New England Story for Sustaining the Sea is an inspiring story of citizens working together for healthier economies and healthier seas across New England. In a region steeped in old maritime tradition, comes a modern wave of big ships, energy industries, and a changing climate, now testing the limits of an already crowded sea. But in a pioneering trial of far-sighted planning—pushed by blueprints for offshore wind energy—old residents and new are coming together to keep their ocean and livelihoods alive. Ocean Frontiers II will premiere October 28, 2013, in Providence at the Providence Public Library Auditorium from 7-9pm (http://ocean-frontiers.org/providence/) and October 29, 2013, in Boston at the New England Aquarium’s Simons IMAX Theatre from 7-9pm. (http://ocean-frontiers.org/boston) Both events are free and open to the public. Registration is requested.
- GOMA Seeks Fund Development Contractor: The Gulf of Maine Association, which supports the activities of the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment, seeks a Fund Development Contractor to write proposals for both public and private sources for immediate and long term needs and to pursue long term foundation and government funding strategies.
